It’s not the original experience at all but it is kind of hard to get into doom by just playing it vanilla nowadays.
From what I’ve seen and done, the best way to start to play it and really enjoy it is with gzdoom, customize your controls, turn jumping off, get the Doom metal pack wad and the ketchup wad.
